C W Fields selects Lamont

CW FIELDS & Son Ltd is a leading supplier of specialist fire and acoustic doors and bespoke joinery. The company has over 100 years of experience in the joinery trade, and has been involved in a range of prestigious projects through a variety of clients, including Royal Victoria
Hospital Belfast, Kings College London, High Wycombe Library and Royal Ascot.

Among its most recent projects has been the Rolls Building in London, which will house the Chancery Division and the Admiralty, Commercial and Technology and Construction Courts jurisdictions of the High Court. As part of the project, CW Fields has been responsible for the manufacture of some very large door frames and the associated doors. To manufacture the door frames, sections of timber needed to be glued together and to complete this process to the highest standards, CW Fields purchased in August a very large matrix table and a refurbished gluesetter from Lamont, through Yorkshire-based JMJ Woodworking Machinery Ltd. Managing director of CW Fields, Toni Dalla-Riva, told PW&SS that his company’s association with JMJ goes back twenty years, and was particularly important eleven years ago, when CW Fields had a serious fire. “JMJ helped us tremendously through the difficult period of rebuilding the factory, loaning us machines. As a result, we purchased lots of new machines from JMJ. When we require new machinery, we normally follow JMJ’s advice: the company offers a very good service, and we tend to go with whatever is recommended. In this case, JMJ had
only one recommendation: the Lamont matrix table and gluesetter.”

Toni is very impressed with the service he has received from Alan Lamont of Lamont. “The service we have had was excellent: we bought the machine and it was there very quickly. Alan came along with the machine: it was installed and demonstrated to us. We couldn’t ask for better service!” In addition to the Rolls Building project, the matrix table and hand gun are now used to join any large timber panels together. “We have had some very large panels that we have had to extend as we couldn’t get materials wide enough for the application in question. Also, a joined sheet is much more stable than a single sheet of the same size.”

Toni has seen many advantages since the matrix table and clamp were installed. “It is so efficient: we don’t have to cramp up by hand any more, everything is automatic. There are considerable space advantages as the table is vertical, and space is important to us. The speed of the gluesetter is also important: we don’t have to wait for material to dry, and we can spot weld. The advantages of having the system have been great!” When asked if he would recommend it to others, Toni’s response was, “I certainly would!”

C W Fields is renowned for the high quality of its workmanship, such as this imaginative furniture, which includes “book trees” and a “reading roundabout”, located in the children’s area of High Wycombe Library.
